Roster and Rule Changes for College Sports Recruiting

We’ve see a lot of things change in the world of college recruiting the past several years including the Transfer Portal, COVID, NIL and more. Now we are entering a new era of college athletics. Here is a recap of what is changing and what you need to understand now.

New Scholarship Rules:

Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, the NCAA will no longer have by-sport scholarship restrictions. What does this really mean? Now all student-athletes on a Division I college athletic team could receive some type of scholarship, instead of just a specific number of athletes based on the previous restrictions. While in most cases roster caps and scholarship caps have increased as an option, we don’t anticipate all athletes in all sports to be on scholarship. Each school and sport will determine how they plan to manage this new found flexibility. We suspect this will be targeted sport by sport and school by school moving forward.

Equivalency Scholarships:

What is an equivalency scholarship? Now, all sports will now be consider “equivalency sports,” which means colleges can distribute scholarships in all sizes (Full, 75%, 50%, 25% or any other partial amount). Sports that were previously “head count” sports (aka Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball) will now be able to offer partial scholarships.
